■Introduction

■What is HOKUSAI?

HOKUSAI is an illustration generator software that you can create illustrations by means of making combinations of items.

You can create illustrations by selecting and combining items without drawing illustrations.
Select parts and create illustrations with simple mouse operation.
It is not necessary that advanced knowledge and skills.

HOKUSAI is the software that can make illustrations by using assets which is the source of illustrations.
You can install assets from outside, or create it using "Asset Editor" which is bundled with HOKUSAI.
Let's install assets and enjoy creating illustrations.

You can freely publish illustrations and assets that you have created for a charge or free.
For example, illustrations can be released as comics, video games, wallpapers.
You can also publish assets and share them with other users.
Sharing assets brings unlimited possibilities to your works.
Let's share the joy of creation with everyone.

*When publishing assets, you must not to violate copyrights of images that you used for it.

■Editions of HOKUSAI

HOKUSAI has released the following five types.

HOKUSAI

It is with illustration creation software developed by OCTET.
It is available for free on OCTET's website.

- We limit the number of egd files that can be read at the same time to five.
- The only available font for text is IPA Gothic.
- We will allow you to package and distribute the assets which you made.
If you contact us at that time, we will promote your work by putting a link on HOKUSAI.

HOKUSAI Extended Edition

It is an expanded version which added features to HOKUSAI.
The number of assets that can be use is unlimited.
There are also 14 fonts that can be used.
This edition is available at DL site, FANZA, and BOOTH.

HOKUSAI (Steam edition)

The steam version HOKUSAI is released for free on Steam.
- We limit the number of egd files that can be read at the same time to five.
- The only available font for text is IPA Gothic.
The steam version has the Steam community function (e.g. Workshop) and the achievement function.

HOKUSAI Expantion Pack

It is function enhancement software of steam version HOKUSAI.
You can install assets without limitation with Expantion Pack, and you can use additional 14 fonts.

    You can create assets by using the Asset Editor.

  • How to Install Assets

    In order to use various illustrations with HOKUSAI, it is necessary to store assets called "egd file" in the "assets" folder.
    First of all, please install the egd file containing the image data you want to use.

    How to Install Assets

    The egd file can be obtained by the following three methods.

    1: You can get assets by clicking banners displayed on the upper side of the startup screen.
    Please move or copy downloaded egd file to "assets" folder.

    The 'assets' folder can be displayed by clicking the 'Asset Folder' button.
    The added EGD file is automatically loaded on HOKUSAI.

    *There is a case that it is published to the EGD file by including it in "HOKUSAI (free version)".
    In that case, move or copy the EGD file in the "assets" folder to the "assets" folder of HOKUSAI to use.

    * While running "hokusai.exe", it is not possible to delete and overwrite the EGD file in the "assets" folder.
    If you want to delete or overwrite the EGD file in the "assets" folder, please exit "hokusai.exe" once.

    2: There is a way to subscribe to items posted to steam workshop.
    "Steam Workshop" is a service operated by Valve, which allows you to upload and share items created by you.
    You can share your assets with other users on Workshop.
    Please click the "Steam Workshop" button displayed at the top of HOKUSAI.

    By clicking the subscribe button, you will be able to use the EGD files posted to the Workshop.

    This method is only for the Steam version.

    3: You can make assets with the Asset Editor.
    This method will be described later.

    2)Select File

    First, select the file to edit the illustration.
    Data will be automatically saved in the selected file.
    You can also edit file information by right clicking on the file list.

    Right click on the file name, the following menu will be displayed.

    Rename

  • Change the file name.
    This name is used as the folder name when exporting images.
  • Edit Memo

  • Change the description displayed when selecting a file.
  • Export All Images

  • All illustrations in the file are collectively ecported as PNG images.
  • Copy

  • Copy the data of the selected file onto the clipboard.
  • Paste

  • Overwrite the data copied on the clipboard to the selected file.
  • Delete

  • Delete the file.
    The file will also be deleted from the computer.
  • 3)Select Asset

    You can select asset by selecting the "Add" button at the bottom left, or "Add" on the right click menu.

    If you select "Add", the assets selection screen will be displayed.
    Please click the asset you want to use.

    When you select asset, a list of scenes of the asset is displayed.
    Select the scenes you want to use and click the OK button.
    Then you will move on to the customize session by clicking on the scene.

    You can duplicate, delete, and sort illustrations by right-clicking the thumbnail.

    4)Edit Illustrations

    You can customize illustrations by left clicking on various items and colors in categories.

    (1)Category selection button
    Categories are made up of body, eyes, mouth, cheeks, hair, clothes, accessories, body fluids, additional items, shared parts group and text.
    You can customize illustrations by selecting them.

    (2)Sub category selection button
    Sub category is a subdivision of categories, for example clothing category is divided from clothes (upper), clothes (lower), underwear (upper), underwear (lower).
    You can deselect all items by left clicking the subcategory button.

    (3)Item selection button
    Select items in category.
    On the screen, you can select the items of eyes.
    If there is an arrow icon on the left of the item name, it is possible to move position of items.
    After moving the item by clicking the icon, you can set the position by left-clicking or pressing Enter key.
    To reset the position, deselect the item once and select it again.
    Click the "T" icon to switch to text editing mode.(Refer to "Edit Text")

    You can select a color of the item.

    (5)Preview button
    You can hide interface by pressing the "Preview" button and check the illustration as a preview.

    (6)Export button
    You can save the illustration you are editing by clicking the "Export" button.

    (7)Open "Pictures" folder
    You can open the "Pictures" folder where the exported image is saved.

    5)Edit Text

    You can create and edit text by clicking the "T" icon on the illustration edit screen.
    To add text Right-click on the screen and select "Create" from the right-click menu.
    You can duplicate or delete it by opening the right-click menu on the added text.

    (1)Select vertical / horizontal
    You can make text horizontally or vertically.

    (2)Select font
    Change the font of the text

    (3)Select color
    Change the colors of font.

    Move text by left-dragging on it.
    Change the font, text color, vertical and horizontal writing in the text setting panel.
    You can end editing by clicking the icon of "T" mark.

    *Special characters
    In this software, special characters can be represented by alternative fonts.
    Instead, please note that the original font can not be used.

    6)Font Settings

    You can open the font setting screen by pressing the "font setting" button on the illustration selection screen upper left.

    Here, you can set the font displayed in the setting panel when text is edited.
    For each file, you can use up to 5 combinations of font, character size, and edge size.

    * Some fonts do not include kanji or alphabets.
    If you change the font of already added text, the setting will also be reflected in those.

    7)Save File

    The edited file is automatically saved at the timing when creating, duplicating, deleting, or rearranging illustrations on the illustration editing screen when you click the "Done" button on the illustration edit screen.

    8)Export Images

    You can display the image output dialog from the right-click menu of the file selection screen or the illustration selection screen and illustration edit screen.

    You can save the PNG format image by clicking the "Save" button in the directory.
    Please note that if a file with the same name already exists in the save destination, it will be forcibly overwritten.

    9)Option

    You can make various settings of HOKUSAI in option menu.
    Changes will take effect the next time the application is started.

    ■How to use Asset Editor

    1)About Asset(EGD file)

    Assets(EGD files) are data for creating illustration with HOKUSAI.
    Assets includes image data and category information (information on which category belongs to body, eyes, clothing, etc).
    Therefore, in order to create illustrations with HOKUSAI, it is necessary to obtain assets.
    Assets can be obtained by the following three methods.

    1: You can get assets by clicking banners displayed on the upper side of the startup screen of HOKUSAI.


    2: There is a way to subscribe to items posted to Steam Workshop (hereinafter referred to as "Workshop").
    It is a service operated by Valve, which allows you to upload and share your own assets.


    3: You can make assets with Asset Editor (asset_editor.exe) by yourself.
    Here we will explain how to make assets by using the editor.

    2)Prepare Image

    Prepare the image you want to use with HOKUSAI.
    Image formats that can be imported as assets to HOKUSAI are BMP, JPEG, and PNG images.

    However, transparent PNG files are necessary except background images.
    Because if you use other than transparent PNG files for images of person, it will hide the background.

    To use a transparent PNG image, please register it as it is without cutting the margin.
    The margin is automatically cut when registering the image.

    3)Start Asset Editor

    First of all, please click the "editor start button" on the start screen of the HOKUSAI and activate the Asset Editor (asset_editor.exe).

    4)Creat New Project

    To create a new asset, select "File" from the menu or "New" from the toolbar.

    When the "Create New Project" dialog appears, enter a project name.
    Select "Browse" button to change the save destination directory.

    5)Select Scene

    Before registering items, please select the scene first.
    "Scene 1" is automatically added when creating a new project, please select it.

    You can add/delete and edit scenes from the right click menu of the scene list.

    6)Add Item

    To register items, follow the steps below.
    Please click category selection button and sub category selection button.
    Next, select the category of the item you want to add.
    Then, drag and drop image files to the item list or select "Add" from the right click menu of the item list and select images.

    You can delete and rename the added items by right clicking.
    If you want to make detailed item settings, select "Edit" from the right click menu or double click on the item in the list.

    By clicking "Edit" or double-clicking an item from the right-click menu of the item list, you can make detailed settings for the item.

    Name

  • Enter the name of the item displayed in HOKUSAI.
  • Group ID

  • Group ID is a value for setting multiple selectable items in the same category.

    For example, if you want to set so that you can select "Hats" and "Glasses" together in the accessory category, please set the parameters below.

     Group ID of "Hats": 100
     Group ID of "Glasses": 200

    On the other hand, you can only select up to one item with the same category and same Group ID at the same time.
  • Public

  • If you check "Public", the item shown in all scenes.
    For example, by setting backgrounds and letters as "Public", those items can be combined with other assets.
    We recommend using public parts setting when add backgrounds, letters, and so on.
  • Movable

  • "Movable" items will be able to change the display position.
    It is recommended to set effects, letters as movable items for example.

  • Set Images

    To set the images, click the "Color Select" button and select the slot of the color you want to set.
    After selecting a color, drag and drop the image in the "Preview" area, or click the "Add Image button" to select the image.

    You can delete the image you set by clicking "Delete Image button".

    You can use up to 2 layers for each color and you can set different "z-index" for each layer.
    "z-index" is the value of the display order of items displayed on HOKUSAI.
    Items with higher z-index values are displayed in the foreground and items with lower z-index values are displayed in the background.

    For example, if you want to display "Glasses" in front of "Eyes" and display "Bangs" in front of it, please set the following parameters.

     z-index of "Eyes": 19000
     z-index of "Glasses": 20000
     z-index of "Bangs": 25000

    Color Icon Settings

  • By changing the value of "Color Icon" panel, you can change the appearance of color icons displayed on HOKUSAI.
    You can pick up the color you want to set by clicking in the preview area.
  • 8)Scene Thumbnail Settings

    "Thumbnail" is the images displayed when selecting scenes on HOKUSAI.

    To set thumbnails, select the scene on the Scene List and double-click or select "Thumbnail Settings" from the right-click menu.

    (1)Category List:

    Select the category of the item you want to set as a thumbnail.

    (2)Item List:

    List of registered items.
    Enable the checkbox to the left of the item name to set the item to use for the thumbnail.

    (3)Select Color:

    Select the color of the item.

    (4)Preview:

    The image displayed as thumbnail on HOKUSAI is displayed here.

    Enable checkbox of the items you want to set as a thumbnail from the item list on the "Thumbnail setting" dialog.
    Then check the image of the preview and click "OK" button.

    *The number of items that can be set for one thumbnail is 16.

    9)Asset Information Settings

    To change the asset information, select "Asset Information" from the "Tools" in menu or "AssetInfo" from the tool bar.

    Information

    Asset Title:
    The asset title is displayed in HOKUSAI.
    Also, if you submitted the asset to Steam Workshop, this name will be displayed.

    Author Name:
    Name of creator of the asset.

    Rules/Terms of Use:
    Enter the rules and terms and conditions for users to use the asset here.
    In particular, when publishing assets to other users, be sure to define the terms of use and fill in here.
    The entered contents are displayed on HOKUSAI's asset selection screen and Workshop item page.

    Allow users to create additional items for this project:
    If you enable this checkbox, other users will be able to take over the EGD file and add new items.
    *We have not implemented it yet at the moment (v.1.2.0).

    Tags:
    By selecting the genre tag for the created asset, the user can find items easier.
    Multiple tags can be selected.

    Preview

    Set thumbnail of HOKUSAI asset selection screen and thumbnail image used for Workshop preview image.
    Drag and drop the image (BMP, JPG, PNG) into the preview image area, or click the browse button to select the image.

    Please note that when transparent PNG images are used, transparent items are automatically set as black.

    The optimal image size for the preview image is 560 x 420 px (aspect ratio 4:3).
    Since the size of the image is automatically adjusted at the time of reading, it is not necessary to change the image size in advance.

    10)Export Asset(EGD file)

    In order to be able to use the asset with HOKUSAI, you need to export the EGD file.
    Select "File - Export Asset" from the menu, or select "Export" from the toolbar.
    Select a storage location to export the asset on the Save File Dialog.
    Specify the save destination and click "Save", the EGD file will be exported.
    You can use the EGD file by placing it in the "assets" folder of HOKUSAI.

    11)Save & Load Project

    To save the contents of the project edited with "asset_editor.exe", select "Save" from the "File" item in the menu, or "Save" from the toolbar.

    To load a project, select "Open" from the "File" item in the menu or "Open" from the toolbar.
    You can import the project file by selecting the imp format file from the "Open" dialog.

    12)Publish Asset

    You can publish your own assets and share them with other users.
    Sharing assets brings unlimited possibilities to the illustrations produced from it.

    There are three ways to publish assets.

    1: You can publish it on your website
    2: You can sell it on web market
    3: You can publish with Steam Workshop

    1: You can freely publish assets without contact us.
    It is also possible to include assets in HOKUSAI(free version) and publish them.
    When you publish assets in HOKUSAI, please publish it after understanding the terms of use of HOKUSAI.
    Please contact us if you want to display the asset which you published on your website on the banners at the top of the start screen of HOKUSAI.

    2: It is also possible to sell assets with some web market.
    Also, you do not need to contact us.
    it is also possible to include assets in HOKUSAI(free version) and publish them.
    When you publish assets in HOKUSAI, please publish it after understanding the terms of use of HOKUSAI.
    At this time, we will not require margin as to the revenue you took with sale.
    Please contact us if you want to display the asset which you published on your website on the banners at the top of the start screen of HOKUSAI.

    3: You can upload and share your own assets via Steam Workshop.
    * The function to upload to Workshop is available only in "HOKUSAI Steam version".

    To upload items to Steam Workshop, first start the Asset Editor.
    Next, create or read a project of the asset you want to upload.
    Furthermore, if you select "Upload" button on the tool bar or "Upload to Steam Workshop" from menu, "Upload Setting Dialog" is displayed.

    Select "Visibility" to set the target of publication in Workshop.

    Public: Publish to the whole Workshop user.
    Friends-only: Releases only to Friends on Steam.
    Private: Just uploading it will not appear on Workshop.

    If you want to publish the software and assets as a set, please include it with the free version of HOKUSAI and publish it.


    - We will prohibit the act of reverse engineering (disassemble, decompile, etc.) on this software to analyze / modify the contents.

    - If you'd like us to introduce assets on the link on HOKUSAI, please contact us.

    Other

    -We may change the contents of this agreement, but we can not notify the user every time.
    Please refer to the latest terms and conditions stated on this page when using.

    ■Other

    FAQ

    I could not start HOKUSAI.

    If you can not start the software by displaying a message such as" Can not start the program because there is no msvcp 140.dll (msvcr 140. dll, vcruntime 140. dll) on the computer ", please download and install Microsoft Visual C ++ redistributable package (x86) of Visual Studio 2017.

    *Please select "x86"and download it.

    Execute the downloaded vc_redist.x86.exe and check "I accept the license terms and terms of use".
    Then you can setup by clicking "Install".

    I could not load assets with HOKUSAI.

    You can not read egd files and save data created with an editor newer than version 1.2.0 in older versions.

    If you are using an older version, please re-download / overwrite the software from each download site.
